Review: What You Left Behind by Jessica Verdi

Book Title: What You Left Behind
Author: Jessica Verdi
Published Date: August 4th, 2015
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Genre: YA Contemporary
Standalone
Book Link: Goodreads

Synopsis from Goodreads:
It’s all Ryden’s fault. If he hadn’t gotten Meg pregnant, she would have never stopped her chemo treatments and would still be alive. Instead, he’s failing fatherhood one dirty diaper at a time. And it’s not like he’s had time to grieve while struggling to care for their infant daughter, start his senior year, and earn the soccer scholarship he needs to go to college.

The one person who makes Ryden feel like his old self is Joni. She’s fun and energetic—and doesn’t know he has a baby. But the more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to keep his two worlds separate. Finding one of Meg’s journals only stirs up old emotions, and Ryden’s convinced Meg left other notebooks for him to find, some message to help his new life make sense. But how is he going to have a future if he can’t let go of the past?

Disclaimer: I received an ARC from the author.

Review:
I legitimately don't know how Jessica Verdi does it. She creates compelling stories with interesting characters. Tosses in a lot of feelsy moments and voila, she's got a story that I will fall in love with. What You Left Behind was definitely different than her previous books, but it followed her formula to a T.

Interesting plot. Check
Captivating characters. Check
Tons of feels. Check

It took me a bit of time to warm up to Ryden to be totally honest. He seemed to be struggling with everything and trying to do it all. He didn't want his life to change at all and he relied heavily on his mom to care for Hope, his baby. I know it's probably tough to assume so much responsibility so quickly, but his actions at the beginning of the book were a bit maddening.

He was baffled that his daughter seemed to hate him, but babies at her age form attachments to the people who care for them the most. In this case, that was Ryden's mom. Ryden is still in school, playing soccer and working. It doesn't feel like his schedule was really changed at all and to be honest, he seemed selfish at times. It was probably his age, but it was definitely something that I noticed.

Finally things started to change, Ryden had to make some decisions about Hope and his mom couldn't make the decisions because she was not the baby's next of kin.

Most of the reviews will probably focus on Ryden's growing romance with Joni, and I will talk about her later, but right now I want to talk about Ryden's relationship with his mother. We don't usually get to see mother/son relationships in YA. In fact, I think this book may be the first one I've read with such a positive mother/son relationship. In fact, I think it was my favorite part of this book. She was just so supportive and kind to her son and to her granddaughter.

I really liked Joni. She was quirky, fun and she had a healthy self respect for herself. She was good for Ryden. I was excited for them to get together, and I rooted for them. They made sense as a couple. I wish we had seen more of Joni because I feel like we didn't get to know as much about her as I would have liked.

The journals told a story. A story that we learned about right alongside Ryden. It showed that this whole situation was not as black and white as we all initially thought. I am a very black & white thinker, so this made me do a lot of thinking. I  didn't love Meg, but her journals helped me understand certain things that she did.

Jessica Verdi had already earned herself on my auto-read & auto-buy author lists, and this one was certainly no exception. I really enjoyed this book and will be giving it 4.5 stars. I do recommend this book because not only was it unique, but it also had some diverse and interesting characters.

Stacking the Shelves #77

This weekly feature is hosted by Tynga's Reviews

Hi readers!

This week was pretty blah overall. I contemplated taking a brief hiatus from blogging. I still may do this, but not right now.

I downloaded one book from EW thanks to Bekka talking me into it. I was granted access to two titles through NetGalley.

I went to the library and grabbed some books. Sometimes I need to read physical books because ebooks just aren't doing it for me.

I did a trade with Erin from The Hardcover Lover. Thank you Erin!

Hi guys!

This post is coming a day earlier than usual as I have something scheduled for tomorrow and I hate having more than one post per day on the blog.

This week, I added two new review books, a book that I pre-ordered came in, and I was gifted a book. I was actually gifted the book last week, but I totally forgot to include it on last week's haul post. I had extra money on a gift card, so I bought myself another book,

Stacking the Shelves #66

This feature is brought to you by Tynga's Reviews

I have no excuses for the lack of posts recently. I've been going through a lot of personal things, and I've been struggling with them. I've kept no secrets about them, but I think I may be crawling out of the well, metaphorically speaking.

I went to Barnes & Noble last week and did some book shopping. Usually that makes me feel better, but at the time I was still struggling. My pre-order of Emery Lord's newest book arrived on release day.

My blogger friend, Mary is letting me borrow Katie Finn's second book in her series. So thank you so much Mary!

Jessica Verdi generously sent me an ARC of her newest book. I am a superfan of her books and I'm pretty sure she knows that.

I stopped by the library and picked up some books. Hoping that one of them ends my massive reading slump. I could use a win right about now.

I also received a belated birthday & Christmas package from Meredith, one of my blogging besties. Thank you so much Meredith! And finally I got a book from my Secret Sister. It was a book I had already read, but I loved it and wanted a finished copy.

Disclaimer: Library book.

Review:
I was sure I'd love this book. It looked like it was straight out of a script from Law and Order: SVU. I looove crime shows, always have.  So I was excited about this book from the start. Plus the cover was perfect.

Unfortunately this book bored the heck out of me. I couldn't get into it. I normally love the creepy books, but this psychopath was anything but exciting and interesting. In fact his supposed reasons for murder, rape & kidnapping were so overdone, I was bored. He did all this crappy stuff to protect women from the dangers of the real world. He wanted to keep girls pure, and that's why he kept girls in his cellar, and named them after flowers.

His mom had been cheated on, and so Clover/Colin, whatever the hell he was called, felt the need to murder the "other women" His mother loved flowers so that was another reason why he named them Lily, Violet, Rose & Poppy. He considered them "his family" His perfect, pure and whole family. It didn't matter to him that Summer/Lily came from a loving family. What mattered was that she was "allowed" to walk alone in the dark at night.

Summer herself was exasperating. I could not understand why she thought it was a good idea to walk alone in the dark. I was pissed at her boyfriend for not insisting that he come with her. Of course I'm not blaming her for what happened to her, and I'm also not blaming Lewis, her boyfriend.

The pacing was very jerky. Sometimes it would be intense and mildly fascinating, and other times it was boring and uninteresting. I wasn't excited about picking it up, and in fact I got really excited when I got to put it down. The editing was pretty crappy, and if I had to see one more exclamation point, I was going to scream. The author used an abundance of them, usually when it was completely pointless.

I was hoping for a creepy, bone chilling, thrilling ride. What I got was a predictable story with unlikeable characters and a jerky plot. I'll be giving this book 2 stars, and I will not be reading the next book. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
