EXCERPT
“Happy birthday, gorgeous,” he says softly.
“Thank you.”
Leaning down, he kisses me gently, longingly, sweetly. It reminds me of when we were kids, making out by the lake in our hometown. I inhale deeply as if the air that I breathe needs to be savored. I can’t believe he still kisses me like this. With the amount of love and passion he gives into every piece of my soul, my heart pounds in my chest, almost bringing tears to my eyes.
I tenderly and slowly kiss him back. Wanting to be in this moment forever, I’m afraid to move because it might break the spell. His hand weaves into my hair, cupping my head, as I move both of my hands gingerly along his back.
Brent lifts his head up, just enough, so we can look into each other’s eyes. I lick my lips, awaiting his move, while I look deep into the soul of the man who knows my everything as much as I know his.

Crossing Paths by Melanie Stinnett

Design by Sarah Hansen of Okay Creations.
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance

Synopsis:
The crossing paths of friendship, family, love, and loss are often complicated.

June Deckert and Caroline Smith sparked a friendship in college that carried them through graduation. Although they are complete opposites in every way, they have spent the last four years inseparable.

That is, until now.

June finds herself falling for a man who seems unattainable. As she works side by side with him on a new media campaign, their feelings for each other come alive. But when his actions start to speak louder than words, she wonders if she’s missing something.

Meanwhile, Caroline is fighting against her feelings for a recent acquaintance, and she decides to keep her new love interest a secret from June. Overwhelmed by these new emotions, her moods change swiftly, swinging up and down like a yo-yo.

While June and Caroline try to maneuver their way through new relationships, Caroline starts lying to June to protect her from a truth that threatens to break her heart and tear them apart.

In the end, Caroline’s deceit will test their friendship, and June will have to decide if her chance at love is worth putting her heart on the line.

Excerpt 1:

As I push open the door, he is leaning against the counter, just finishing off a glass of water. His head is tilted back slightly, getting the last drop, before he swallows. I never knew drinking water while covered in sweat could look sexy. I close my eyes to limit the visual stimulation as I try to ward off the blush I feel creeping into my cheeks.

“You took your sweet time getting in here,” he states.

When I open my eyes, he is standing closer to me with his hip resting against the kitchen island.

I walk toward the door that leads to the backyard and pause briefly to face him. “Um, well, I had to traverse the mountain of holiday decorations in the entryway.”

Laughing, he steps toward me and places one of his hands against the door just above my shoulder as his opposite hand takes hold of my hip. Before I know what’s happening, my back is pressed tightly against the door.

“I was hoping we could talk tonight,” he says softly.

My heart begins beating quickly, and it feels like it’s in my throat. “Really?”

He nods and leans in closer to me, his nose brushing against the skin just below my ear. “Have you told June?” he whispers, touching his lips to my neckline.

Goose bumps rise all over my body, and I feel certain that I might faint at any moment. “No,” I respond in a voice so hushed that even I have trouble hearing it.

His lips trace the line of my jaw. Each time he moves to another place on my skin, the prior space feels numb and neglected. When I feel his hand tighten on my hip, my body tenses in response. Just as he is about to reach the corner of my lips, the doorknob turns, and the door jolts against my back. My eyes widen in concern, and Liam hangs his head, sighing in what seems like frustration.

He looks into my eyes as the door continues to shake, and then he nods his head toward the other door. Continuing to hold his weight against the door, he releases his body’s pressure from mine, and I walk slowly backward through the opposite doorway.

I hear a loud thud as the door closes behind me. As June begins yelling something unintelligible, I hold my hands over my mouth, attempting to stifle a laugh. Liam runs through the door at lightning speed, closely followed by June.

Although she stops when she sees me, she’s still yelling loudly. “One day you’re going to regret playing all these nasty jokes on me. I could have gotten a concussion!  You are such a buffoon!” She clenches her teeth and stomps her foot like a small child. “Hey, Caroline. I didn’t know you were here.”

“Just got here a few minutes ago,” I say, trying to act nonchalant. Glancing up the stairway to the wooden railing across the upstairs loft, I catch a glimpse of Liam smiling.

“I’m thirsty. Let’s get a drink,” I say, giving Liam a small smile in return before I walk out of sight.

Excerpt 2:

When I was ten years old, I got a trampoline. My first thought wasn’t about how it would impact my life. I thought about the special tricks I could learn, like bouncing my friends higher than any sane adult would allow. The moment I ripped through that wrapping paper, I was ecstatic as I stared at the picture of three happy kids jumping with their limbs flailing through the air. The box was gigantic, but I found a way to hug that box with more emotion than any other hug I had ever given.

Of course, my dad had to put it together right away. We sat in the backyard with metal pieces and tools surrounding us. The large round fabric was spread out, obscuring the grass from the sun.

Two weeks later, when I was happily jumping up and down, the unimaginable happened. One moment, I was free as a bird, flying through the air, and then falling, bending the fabric toward the ground. As I took my next flight, I could have never predicted what occurred next. When my feet left the trampoline, I raised my hands out from my sides with a huge grin across my face. While my body was in the air, I glanced toward the front of the empty house next door, and suddenly, my world changed.

A petite young girl with blonde hair flowing around her shoulders slid off the seat of a moving van. She was smiling and laughing as she ran up the sidewalk. My body descended, but my heart was still floating above. Then, it came crashing down moments after my eyes lost sight of her.

My young mind had no words for the emotion that planted its seed that day. I should have known then that I would fall in love with her. Instead, with everything in my being, I fought against loving her for the next three years.

About the Author:

I have enjoyed reading and writing since I was very young. Some of my fondest memories from childhood are of spending time with my mom or grandma reading a good book. Over the years, it never crossed my mind that writing my own novel would be an attainable goal. After reading several independently published novels by Jamie McGuire, Colleen Hoover and others, I decided I needed to give that dream a chance.

When I’m not reading and writing, I enjoy spending time with my three favorite guys: my husband and my two little boys.

In addition to being an author, I work as a Speech Language Pathologist to provide therapy to adults who are dealing with speech, language, cognition or voice deficits. My day job is rewarding in many different ways and I love having the opportunity to help others in a time of need.

Book Blitz: Love Notes by Heather Gunter

Synopsis:
How do you cope when the people you care for hurt you the most? When the way you feel on the outside, smothers you on the inside. And when you are left to face your demons alone, will you learn that only you have the power to overcome them?

Charlie has never had it easy. Between the constant moving and the incessant fat comments and jokes from her father, her self-worth is nonexistent. Her reflection in the mirror shows her nothing but a plain Jane. Music is the only thing that keeps her sanity in check.

Charlie catches the eye of the town star quarterback, Maverick. With her curves, her brunette hair, and the voice of an angel, Maverick has never met anyone like her. Everything that is different about Charlie just makes Maverick like her more. Unfortunately, Charlie doesn’t see it herself.Proving it to her may deem harder than he thinks, especially when tragedy strikes and tears them apart.
Now standing on her own two feet she may finally learn exactly who she is, what’s she’s capable of and how very un plain Jane she really is.

Teaser 1
I’m pressed firmly against him, and my hands rest on the hardness of his muscled chest. The nearness of him is intoxicating. My heart speeds up with the knowledge of what is inevitably going to happen next. Right now, I don't care how long I've known him, or what the usual rules of dating dictate.
We are staring at each other, eye to eye. “I’m going to kiss you now, Charlie,” Maverick whispers.
At that moment, all I can do is nod. No words were going to be coming out of this mouth; it was going to be used for other things.
Maverick moves his arms from around my waist, gently cups my face with his hands, and tips my head back some. He places his lips on mine, and it feels as if time is standing still. The kiss starts out oh so slowly, and as we find our rhythm, it begins to increase in pressure and intensity. My arms, having a mind of their own, begin to wrap around his neck and pull him even closer, although I'm not sure how that is even possible. I honestly didn’t think we could get any closer together than we already were. Maverick kisses me like I am everything, like I am his last dying breath. I have never been kissed like this before.
I finally draw away from him to catch my breath. “That was…” Maverick looks me in the eyes. “Wow.”

Teaser 2
Will starts chuckling, “Yeah, yeah, I know. I could tell. You forget, I’ve known you since diapers. I have to say though, Maverick, I’ve never seen you so, so....Twitterpainted.”
Nice. A Disney reference.
“You ass,” I laugh, and playfully punch him in the arm and grab him into a headlock. Of course, it doesn’t faze him and he’s laughing, just like the tool he is. I let go and he finally stops laughing and turns serious, like the switching of a light.
“Nah, seriously dude, I can tell you like her. She’s hot Maverick, and seems really nice. She also doesn’t seem very into herself, which is rare. Plus, I also saw her walking with Tori earlier. So I know she’s got to be cool.”
I instantly feel a pang of jealousy. I must have gotten a look on my face and Will can read me like a damn book.
“Now, now don’t get all territorial and go pissing all over her. That might turn her off,” he says. I simmer down because I know he still has feelings for someone else. It was just the fact that he noticed. But then again, anyone would notice. How could you not? I just don’t want any competition. The thought of someone else being with her was driving me insane.
I have to make a move and I need to do it soon. However, this was not just any girl. She is different, and I can already sense she is completely clueless as to how others see her. She doesn’t see what Will and I have already noticed. She’s special and I need to be the one to help show her that.

Teaser 3
My eyes are glued shut, making it even more difficult for me to wake up. I feel like I need a crow bar just to pry them open. My thoughts instantly drift to the conversation with my parents last night, the reason for the tears that caused my nasty crusted eyes.
Mixed feelings fall to the pit of my stomach and I’m second-guessing myself already. Everything I felt so confident about last night, now seems uncertain.
I drag myself out of bed before anyone can scream and holler at me. I don’t need that first thing in the morning. Last night was more than enough.
I pick out my clothes, just like I always do, mindful of my weight. Carefully, I apply my makeup, taking a critical look at myself in the mirror. I’m as satisfied as I can be, looking the way I do.
I quietly walk in to the kitchen to grab a bite to eat and hope to avoid all confrontation. Unfortunately, I spot my dad sitting at the bar in his trademark spot, coffee in hand, with the newspaper. My mom is standing at the stove in her bathrobe. I see her stiffen when she hears me, but she doesn’t turn.
The minute I walk in, he lifts his head up from that damn paper and smirks at me, before dropping his head back down to continue his reading. I don’t speak, I’ve already said enough.
I grab my breakfast of choice, a bagel. I decide to grab and go; no toaster, no cream cheese. I can’t stand being in his house a minute longer than I have to be. As if he can sense my weakness, my dad decides to speak. I don’t turn around. I just stand there, waiting to hear his cut. Because I know, that’s all it ever is. I expect it. One more dig.
“Charlie, try not to embarrass yourself with this boy today.”
I don’t respond. I just turn and walk to the front door so I can escape. I need air, I feel like I’m suffocating. The moment I’m outside, I crouch down, put my head between my legs, with my hands on my knees, and take a deep breath.  I slowly stand up and start to walk over to Lexie.

Teaser 4
I glance over at her shyly. “This is very new for me. I have never been in this situation, and I can’t believe of all people, he wants to date me.”
“Awww, so he asked you finally, huh? How do you feel about that?”
“I like him, I really do, but I’m worried. Like, if he gets to know me he may not like me--at all. Then I've put myself out there, only to be crushed and have my heart broken. I don’t think I can handle that. I just don’t think he will like what he discovers if he gets to know me.” I stop walking and just stand there, looking at Tori. I can see the wheels turning in her head.
“First of all, when you say shit like that, it pisses me off. It’s also a dig against me. Like, I don’t have good taste when picking out my friends. I don’t like stupid people. I like you and I knew I would the first time we talked. I’m not sure why you don’t think people are going to like you when they get to know you. Here is what I know, and hear me now because I am not going to say this again. This may be harsh, but I’m always going to be honest and tell you exactly how it is, 'cause that’s me and you deserve that. Plus, that’s how I roll; I will always give it to you straight.” She peers at me before questioning, “Got it?”
At this point all I can do is nod my head that I get it. Man, this chick means business when she gets all riled up. Mental note. Never--piss--off--Tori--ever.

“First off, you are an amazing person. You’re smart, pretty and you don’t even know it, which makes you even prettier in my opinion. You’re absolutely not fat, so please get that out of your head. You actually have a body, which most girls would kill for. I’m as flat in the boob area as the Sahara desert and would love to have something up there, something at least my bra could hold up. Actually Charlie, if I swung that way, I would be on you like white on rice. You would so be my type.” Of course, at this point she’s laughing and I know we’re good. Tori laughing is always a good sign.

Synopsis:
When Marcus Manning is hired to help ease Perrine Memorial Hospital's transition from privately owned hospital to part of a behemoth system that covers most of the Pacific Northwest,he immediately stirs up trouble. He begins lying, bad-mouthing and blackmailing & even threatening the hospital staff and before he can really get going, pathologist Toni Day blows the whistle.

While the hospital considers firing him, someone else comes up with a more permanent solution-cyanide. Now Toni is the number one suspect and she must clear her name and find the real killer.

Disclaimer: I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Review:
This book is set two years after Too Much Blood. Not much has changed in Toni's personal life but things are changing at the hospital where she has been a pathologist for many years. Marcus Manning is one character that I wanted to take a shotgun to,and quickly. Usually I don't have that vehement of a statement about characters but he was the biggest book related asshole that I had "met" in awhile.

He is the type of character who abuses his power to the point of Toni being the recipient of a serious bodily injury that eventually requires surgery. He scares her staff by blackmailing them and attempting to extort sexual favors from him. All the while hiding the fact that he is abusing his wife on a daily basis. I wanted to reach through the book and strangle him until he turned limp beneath my hands.

Someone else had the same idea as Marcus is killed in plain sight of many people at a hospital picnic. No one knows who did it. Was it the wife? Was it the wife's best friend whom Marcus had bragged about sleeping with? Or was it Toni, fed up with the physical & emotional damage that Marcus was inflicting upon her?

I really enjoyed this book. Like Too Much Blood,I found Toni to be a badass and she was the type of woman who took no crap from anyone. Even from someone who had the ability to get her fired. In Too Much Blood, one of my only criticisms was that the secondary characters weren't as well developed as I would have liked, particularly Hal, Toni's husband of many years.

However, the author seemed to take these comments to heart and I noticed a definite increase in character development this time around. I got a much better picture of Hal as well as Toni's stepdaughter & her husband Pete. Lets not forget the friends as well. They played a much more important role this time around.I was thrilled to see such commitment to better character development.

The majority of the book seemed to focus on the crap that Marcus was attempting to throw at the hospital before his untimely death. That would be my only complaint this time around. It's not enough to change my rating though.

This book was a throughly enjoyable book that kept me guessing throughout the entire thing. I actually enjoyed this book MORE than Too Much Blood and for that reason, this book gets a full 5 stars from me. I cannot wait to see what the author writes next.

If they do meet again,is that initial attraction enough to withstand ex issues and the problems that occur with having drastically different backgrounds?

Disclaimer: I won this book from Steph & Kat @ Cuddlebuggery

Review:
Well having no internet for a week can definitely help with the reading pile. This book was a very easy read. I finished it in less than 24 hours. It started off really cute and I liked Seth and Skye instantly and I felt the spark between them. After that first meeting, all went to hell in a hand-basket.

One of my biggest issues was how they both moped and pined for the other. Making a romantic partner the only important thing in your life drives me insane. It's important to have balance in a relationship. Friends and other interests are important too and I don't think either Skye or Seth seemed to realize that.

Skye didn't seem to know how to be fun when she wasn't with Seth. I found her boring and completely uninteresting. I actually found her friends to be more interesting than her. That's not a good thing. I did not connect with Skye at all.Probably because I am happy on my own and don't depend on a guy to make me happy.

I know they attempted to date others before the reconnected the following summer but I don't think they gave poor Karen or Ben a fair shot. I think they had major tunnel vision and that drove me batty as well. Maybe it's just that I don't really like the cornball aspect of this book.

I actually liked Seth better with Karen than with Skye. Karen seemed more confident and sure of herself no matter if she was single or not. Now that's the kind of character I can get behind.

I did like how there was a dual point-of-view throughout this book. I'm seeing it more and more in YA books and I love it so much. It allows for more depth for the characters as you get two viewpoints. I actually liked reading Seth's parts the best, maybe because I identified with him the most out of all the characters, you know aside from him being a guy and me being a girl.

The one thing that drove me absolutely BONKERS at the end of the book was Skye's college decision. You should NEVER pick a school based on where your boyfriend is. Particularly if you aren't engaged yet. You don't know what's going to happen and you could end up single and at a school that isn't as great as the one you turned down because of how far away it was from your boyfriend.

This book is getting 2 stars from me. Plainly put,I just didn't like it. Parts of it were better than others, but parts of it made me want to throw the book across the room. Remember ladies,a guy will respect you and love you more if you have your own interests outside of him.Don't ever make a guy your everything. Don't ever expect a guy to complete you. You should already be complete and a guy should simply compliment you.

Friday Musings #6

First of all I am SO sorry for the lack of posts in the past week. Our Internet went out last Friday and when we called to see what was going on,they told us that it would be gone until Monday because they were doing some work around our area.

So Monday came and went. Tuesday morning and STILL no internet. That's when we called again and they informed us that this was taking longer than expected (re-wiring) but that it should be back Wednesday morning. Was it back? Nope.

So Thursday comes and we call for what must be the 10th time. Then we are told that someone has to go down to their building and enter the account info personally and that service will be restored immediately. Nope it wasn't. So we call again and they they tell us that it takes 2-4 hours for it to be restored.

When I went to bed last night, nothing had changed. So we call again this morning and we are told that it can take up to 24 hours to be restored.

As of 30 minutes ago,we officially have our internet back.

The silver lining about all of this is that I finished 6 books in the past week. So you will have a LOT of reviews coming your way in the next week or so.

Please let me know if I missed anything big in the blogging world. I missed you guys this past week.
