Book Blogger Challenge- Week 9

Hello again, it is time for the newest installment of the Book Blogger Challenge. This challenge comes from Good Books and Good Wine. If you have participated in this challenge, don't forget to go link up your posts.

This week's challenge is...

Why Do You Blog About Books?
My answer is going to be very short and sweet and to the point. I blog about books because it's fun.It is so much fun to have an outlet for my bookish feelings. Not only that, but blogging about books has given me a lot of friends. Friends that understand exactly how I feel about books. Friends who will flail around right alongside me.

For those of you who think I've gone into it for the ARC's or the recognition or the money I am simply going to laugh my butt off at you. Yes getting ARC's is a nice feeling but if I never received another ARC, I'd still be blogging because I blog because I love books and I love talking about them. As for the recognition, um, what recognition exactly? I am still a relatively new blogger and I'm not that recognizable yet. Even if I were, that wouldn't matter to me.And while I would love to get paid for reading books and writing reviews, I'm not getting paid for it. Again I do it simply because I love talking about books.

So why do you blog about books?

Waiting on Wednesday #1 The Treatment (The Program #2) by Suzanne Young

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It's purpose is to spotlight upcoming releases that we are eagerly waiting for.

My Pick This Week

Can Sloane and James survive the lies and secrets surrounding them, or will The Program claim them in the end? Find out in this sequel to The Program, which Publishers Weekly called “chilling and suspenseful.”

How do you stop an epidemic?

Sloane and James are on the run after barely surviving the suicide epidemic and The Program. But they’re not out of danger. Huge pieces of their memories are still missing, and although Sloane and James have found their way back to each other, The Program isn’t ready to let them go.

Escaping with a group of troubled rebels, Sloane and James will have to figure out who they can trust, and how to take down The Program. But for as far as they’ve come, there’s still a lot Sloane and James can’t remember. The key to unlocking their past lies with the Treatment—a pill that can bring back forgotten memories, but at a high cost. And there’s only one dose.

Ultimately when the stakes are at their highest, can Sloane and James survive the many lies and secrets surrounding them, or will The Program claim them in the end?

My Reaction
Oh my goodness, I cannot wait! The Program was my favorite book of 2013. It had everything a person could want in a book, especially the all-important feels. A whole lot of feels. After the way The Program ended, I have no clue what The Treatment has in store for us readers. All I know is that I need more of James, Sloane and Realm. I don't know how I am going to be able to wait until April to get my hands on this one.Which is why I am hoping that Edelweiss approves me for this title.

So what book are YOU waiting for?

Blog Tour: Let Love Heal by Melissa Collins

photo
Synopsis
Perfection. We all strive for it, but what happens when the desire to be perfect consumes you? What happens when the need to bury your mistakes blinds you? Melanie Crane has always been the perfect daughter, friend, student – she’s been perfect at everything, in fact. But when she lets her insecurities, the ones that she keeps hidden from everyone, get the best of her, she falters in her pursuit of perfection. Melanie crumples under the pressure and buries her pain. Numbed by sadness and guilt, she is determined never to let anyone find out how broken she really is. Bryan Mahoney may appear to have everything in order. He’s charming, witty and completely swoon-worthy. In short, Bryan has life all figured out, but appearances can be deceiving. When the landscape of Bryan’s family changes in an instant, he’s left to pick up the pieces. Not all bruises leave a mark. Now, weary and afraid, Melanie and Bryan must find a way to let love heal their broken and jaded hearts.

Review:

Oh man, I really enjoyed this book which is surprising as I don't usually gravitate towards NA Romance and in fact have had pretty poor experiences with NA all around lately. But this book started a shift in me. Now i'm still not going to love most NA Romances. However I saw a lot of myself and my own insecurities in Melanie, so she was an easily relateable character which made me really happy. The majority of the insecurities that Melanie had, were ones that I either had at one time or even still have.

Now normally I'd love Bryan's back-story as I love a guy who's a little damaged. But for some reason he fell flat for me. He was wonderful to Melanie which I loved but there was just something missing. After thinking about it, I still cannot put my finger on it. Maybe it's the simple fact that, although I could have connected with Bryan, I just didn't. Yet, I would not mind having a Bryan for a boyfriend. He was basically the perfect boyfriend.

I wish I had read books 1 & 2 first. I didn't even realize it was the third book in a series until I started reading it. Yet it wasn't needed. Let Love Heal can be read and enjoyed as a standalone.

I will be giving it four stars. I really enjoyed the book overall. Loved Melanie, but just could not connect with Bryan.Melissa Collins has definitely began to restore my faith in NA Romance.

Meet the AuthorMelissa Collins 2I’ve always been an avid reader. Majoring in English Literature was a no brainer. Becoming a teacher and instilling my love for reading into my students was also a no brainer. I’ve spent the last ten years teaching and I’ve loved (mostly) every minute of it. When I was home on maternity leave for my third son, I discovered a new genre that sparked my creativity. My passion for writing sprang from my love of reading and once I knew I had a story to tell, I couldn’t wait to get it out there. I only hope that my readers enjoy reading my story as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Review: The Testing (The Testing #1) by Joelle Charbonneau

Book Title: The Testing (The Testing #1)
Author: Joelle Charbonneau
Published Date: June 4th, 2013
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Books for Children
Genre: YA/Dystopian
Series: Book 1 in The Testing series
Book Link: Goodreads
Purchase Link: Amazon, Barnes & Noble

Synopsis from Goodreads:
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Isn’t that what they say? But how close is too close when they may be one in the same?

The Seven Stages War left much of the planet a charred wasteland. The future belongs to the next generation’s chosen few who must rebuild it. But to enter this elite group, candidates must first pass The Testing—their one chance at a college education and a rewarding career.

Cia Vale is honored to be chosen as a Testing candidate; eager to prove her worthiness as a University student and future leader of the United Commonwealth. But on the eve of her departure, her father’s advice hints at a darker side to her upcoming studies--trust no one.

But surely she can trust Tomas, her handsome childhood friend who offers an alliance? Tomas, who seems to care more about her with the passing of every grueling (and deadly) day of the Testing. To survive, Cia must choose: love without truth or life without trust.

Disclaimer: I won this book from Popcorn Reads.

Review:
This book was very similar to The Hunger Games, which I loved. I had no idea how similar they would be until I started reading this book.Nowadays it's very hard to have a dystopian book not be similar to another dystopian book. However The Testing ended up being much more sinister than I would have ever realized. No the Commonwealth was not was creepy as Panem nor was the world building as good as it was in The Hunger Games.

However I loved Malencia "Cia" Vale. Absolutely loved her. She was a dream heroine. She had empathy and sympathy but she also was a fighter. She was prepared to protect her family at all costs. She didn't get all moony over a guy either. Yes Tomas clearly was into her from the beginning and yes she was attracted to him too, but she never let that interfere with what she was trying to do.

Like the Hunger Games there was a love triangle hinted at. Yes people may disagree with me on that, but it was clear to me that Will is supposed to be the "Peeta" in this series. And much like The Hunger Games trilogy, I am rooting for Will and Cia to get together. I didn't feel anything between Cia and Tomas except friendship. I don't really trust Tomas either. Not after what Cia discovers near the end of this book. Cia may have spilled all of her secrets to Tomas, but Tomas did not afford her the same courtesy. Not by a longshot.

Like I said previously, the world building was not as good in this one as it was in The Hunger Games, but it definitely wasn't terrible either.Add that to my dislike of Tomas and not buying him and Cia together, this book gets 4 stars.I am so excited to see what happens in the next book.

Stacking The Shelves #17

Hello everyone! This was a crazy awesome week filled with excitement for me. First and most awesomely, I got auto approved for all HarperTeen titles on Edelweiss. That is a really big deal for book bloggers. Edelweiss had not been very kind to me in the past so to get auto approved was a major shock for me.

I tried hard to restrain myself as I am already far behind in my reading. Yeah, that did not last long. I had to download nearly all of the HarperTeen titles just in case this auto-approval thing was a total fluke.

Also on this day my copy of Allegiant FINALLY arrived. I may or may not have totally spazzed out and no there is no video of that. I also received an ARC of The Testing from Popcorn Reads which is really weird because I don't remember entering in contests or anything. But nonetheless, I'm SO excited.

I was also having issues with my Kindle at this point but after a quick conference with Amazon's customer service, everything was fixed and I was a happy lady.

Wednesday was another big day. I found out that I got auto-approved for HarlequinTeen's titles from Edelweiss as well.

So I got a grand total of 15 books this week. Yeeeeah, that's a LOT of books. Especially when I'm in the middle of a reading slump. I'm hoping to get out of this slump soonish. Maybe having all these awesome titles will help me out.

Just a reminder, this feature comes from Tynga's Reviews. Don't forget to stop by and link up your Stacking The Shelves posts & vlogs.

Excerpt:
This is a scene of Basil's first night out as a Harvestor, hanging with Drakar and Pam:
Half an hour past ten p.m., knuckles rapped against his door.  An obscure driver escorted him to a limousine.  Drakar would travel in style.
His joyful mood waned the moment Pam rolled her eyes at him.  “I knew it.”
Basil settled on a seat.  The driver pulled away from the curb.  “What?”
Pam shook her head in disapproval, much like his father used to.  Remembering his parents sobered his thoughts, quieted his mind.  A few minutes ride brought them to the highway.  Hazard lights flashed in the near distance.  Two shadows loomed near the vehicle.
“Driver,” Drakar called.  “Pull over.  Looks like those folks are in need.”
The driver nodded and slowed.  Tires bumped and rumbled onto the shoulder.
White teeth flashed when Drakar smiled mischievously.  “Forget the casino, Pam.  Lessons start now.”
The corners of her lips dipped into a neon frown, pink lipstick bright and shiny.  But she held her pout in check.

A couple held their hands up to their faces, blinded by the limo’s headlights.  “Pam, take the guy.  You know the drill.” Drakar instructed.  He turned to Basil.  “If memory serves me correct, overprotective mommy never let you within a foot of a girl’s lips, so we’ll have to improvise.”
Basil chewed his bottom lip, both embarrassed and angered by the truth of Drakar’s words.  Heat flooded his cheeks.  The tips of ears even tingled.
“What is it we’re doing here?”  Basil grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl, rubbing it against his jeans.
“Siphoning,” Pam answered.

Basil stilled, playing the word in his head again.  They were in a limo.  They had more than enough fuel to get to Atlantic City and back ten times over.  He knew she had to mean something else but he didn’t want to risk sounding more useless, pathetic.
Drakar snatched the apple from Basil.
“This will do.”
His grin spread wider.  “Worked out well for Adam and Eve.”
As a kid, Basil learned the story of the first woman and man and the forbidden fruit.  And it most certainly didn’t work out well.  This shook his nerves even more, but he stayed quiet.
Drakar called to the driver.  “Go find out what is wrong.”

Once the driver left, Drakar placed the green apple in one hand and held his other palm a hand’s breadth from the stem, chanting, “Receive to consume.  Animo.”  He spoke the words several times until the skin shone brilliant, inviting and very tempting.
Consume.  Animo.  Basil remembered the second word was another way to say soul.  The gears in his mind reached a conclusion he tried to deny.  The real meaning of siphoning.
Drakar broke into his train of thoughts, handing him the apple.  “Give this to the woman.  It will absorb her soul energy, act as a container since you’re sorely behind in social skills.”
Pam giggled aloud.  “What a waste.  I’m ready, Master.”
Basil bit back the comment that she was probably always ready, knowing it would only earn another snide remark.

The driver tapped the rear passenger side window and Basil opened the door.  “They don’t need much,” the driver said.  Having a little trouble changing the tire in the dark is all.  I’ll help them, if that’s okay with you.” Drakar nodded.  The driver returned to the couple’s vehicle.
Pam shoved Basil out onto the gravel.  He stumble-shuffled but kept upright.  She stuck one leg then the other out of the door with the grace of a feline.  Her face glowed beneath the moonlight, beautiful without her pesky smirk.

She took Basil by the elbow and swayed her hips seductively as they approached the couple.  Her performance wasn’t lost on the guy.  Or the woman.
Pam whispered in Basil’s ear, “Give your apple to the woman first.  I’ll handle the rest.”
He wracked his brain for a good reason anyone would accept a piece of fruit from a complete stranger.  He got nothing.  Pam shot him a glance, noting his silence, then took over.  “Hope you two haven’t waited for help too long out here.”
“A short while, but it’s okay,” the woman responded, lacing her arm with her husband’s.  Moonlight glinted off their matching wedding bands.  “People are understandably leery.  We’re thankful you stopped.”
Pam’s smile curled into something malevolent.  “Don’t thank us yet.  Now!”
Basil slapped the apple into the woman’s hand.  She stood stock still.  Her arms fell to her side, fingers gripping the fruit tightly.  Her eyes widened and glossed over.  At the same time, Pam reached up and jerked the man’s face down.  Her lips bound to his.  He squawked in protest half a heartbeat then loosened like Jello.

The woman’s face paled, thin lips bared over clenched teeth.  The apple’s shine was gone, the job of tempter now fulfilled.  When Basil pried her fingers from the fruit, the last thing he expected was for her slender form to crumple to the ground.  The same happened when Pam withdrew her lips from the man.  Husband and wife laid side by side like heaped rag dolls.

A weighted shiver rolled down Basil’s spine, though not from the night air.  He took solace in watching their chests rise and fall, in knowing he hadn’t taken a life.  The driver’s gasp and the clank of the tire iron pulled him from his thoughts.
“Oh my God!  What have you people…”  The driver couldn’t finish, try as he may.  Not when the odor of decay surrounded them.

Book Blogger Challenge- Week 8

This week's challenge comes to us from Good Books and Good Wine and this week I've been challenged to...

Quick, write 15 bullet points of things that appeal to you on blogs!
  • No noise- There is no point to having noise on a book blog. Most of us are already listening to music.
  • Simple- Having a simple and neat layout is a big deal to me. If a blog is really cluttered up, I am less likely to visit the blog often.
  • Colors- Now I love color, but as someone who is visually impaired, I cannot see the blog text when its in neon pink or green etc.
  • Background- no dark background with light text. It just doesn't work for me.
  • Search bar- So helpful! Especially if I am trying to remember if someone read & reviewed a particular book.
  • Personality! Yes that can be achieved by color and graphics but it can also be achieved by writing style. If I can get a sense of your personality through your posts, that's great.
  • Passion- Goes along with some of the other things. If I can tell that you are truly passionate about books, then that would definitely make me want to visit your blog more frequently.
  • Comments- If I can see that you are interacting with your readers, that will show me a lot and it will make me want to comment on your blog.
  • Reviews of books I loved- Now not everyone will like all the same books but I love reading reviews of books that I loved.Even if we don't have the same opinions on books, that doesn't matter to me.
  • Personal posts-Getting to know the blogger behind the blog as a person is a really big deal to me.
  • Humor- Now I am not great at humor but I love when I read someone's blog and they make me laugh until my sides ache.
  • GIF's- I am just now beginning to see the awesomeness that are GIF's. As long as there aren't 15 GIF's in a single post, I'm happy. Use them sparingly.
  • Pictures- Especially covers of books. I think this is really important to have the book cover with the review so people know what the book looks like.
  • Reliability- I get that people have lives and other things to do, but if you are going to be absent for awhile, let your readers know.
  • Archives- Especially for reviews so the readers can see what you've reviewed in the past.
So what are some things that appeal to you in blogs?
